Newcastle United Join Deco Race

Newcastle supremo Mike Ashley is apparently on the lookout for a world-class, big-name midfielder to round off his squad - and Deco fits the bill. Two players could yet swap the Nou Camp for St. James' Park as Newcastle United look to prise both Juliano Belletti and Deco away from Catalonia.

The north-east club's interest in Belletti is well-known, but Deco has only recently been added to the mix following reputed interest from club owner Mike Ashley.

The secretive billionnaire's representatives have reportedly already begun sounding out a bid for the player, although with Italian giants Internazionale also interested, it's far from a foregone conclusion that even a firm offer would be enough to land the Portuguese midfielder.

However, rumours persist of an imminent £8m (12 million euro) offer for Deco, who has found himself on the margins of Barcelona's pre-season preparations.

Deco has in the past stated a desire to play in the Premiership, most notably with his compatriot Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side, while his attitude towards an Inter switch is not fully known.

The international transfer window closes on August 31, and Barcelona must submit their squad list to the LFP by this time. Whether it'll be with or without Deco remains to be seen.

Barcelona have already offloaded four players this summer, while Newcastle United have already made several high-profile signings, including Alan Smith.
